On the eve of Hawaii's most important home game to date, the Rainbows apparently are saying goodbye to their most used player off the bench.

Bernard McIntosh, a 6-foot-7 junior reserve power forward from Lexington, N.C., missed practice without telling head coach Riley Wallace yesterday and apparently had plans to leave the islands this weekend.

Wallace, who indicated he's ready to wash his hands of the homesick player, said that McIntosh would not be allowed to play even if he attends tonight's game against Fresno State at the Stan Sheriff Center.

This would be the fourth time the transfer from Northland Pioneer College in Holbrook, Ariz., has made a move to leave the team.

McIntosh was talked into staying after he decided to leave in mid-December.

One scholarship player said yesterday that the team was divided on whether to accept McIntosh back then, and he doubted that McIntosh would receive another chance if he did an about-face this time.

McIntosh was averaging 5.9 points, 3.7 rebounds and 17.9 minutes. He had two points and three assists in Thursday's Western Athletic Conference win over Texas-El Paso.

The departure would leave UH with nine active scholarship players.

Hawaii (15-5, 4-3) is tied for third with SMU (16-5, 4-3). Fresno State (15-7, 5-1) is second.

The Rainbows, who beat San Jose State last weekend, are seeking a sweep of the three-game homestand.
