Waimea’s Kobayashi
top coach

Jon Kobayashi, head football coach at Waimea High School on Kauai, is the Aloha Airlines No Hope in Dope Coach of the Year.

Named No Hope in Dope coaches of the year for their respective leagues were Iolani's Wendell Look (Interscholastic League of Honolulu), Waianae's Leo Taaca (Oahu Interscholastic Association), Baldwin's Joseph Balangitao Jr. (Maui Interscholastic League), Waiakea's Edward Rocha (Big Island Interscholastic Federation) and Kobayashi (Kauai Interscholastic League).

They were to be honored today during an Aloha Airlines-sponsored gathering of Hawaii high school coaches and athletic directors, along with Pro Bowl coaches and players, at the Luana Hills Country Club.

The No Hope in Dope program was founded in 1988 by Leighton Kaonohi Sr. of the Honolulu Police Department to discourage the use of illegal drugs and misuse of over-the-counter drugs, including alcohol and tobacco, by intermediate and high school students.

UH water polo team wins

Robin Jones and Eko Lapp each scored twice, leading nationally eighth-ranked Hawaii to a 9-6 victory over No. 6 UC Santa Barbara in the season-opening Rainbow Wahine Water Polo Challenge at Duke Kahanamoku pool last night.

No. 3 UCLA beat No. 12 UC San Diego, 16-4, in the other game.

Gaspar in national semis

Brigham Young-Hawaii's Petra Gaspar won two difficult matches yesterday at Dallas to become the first-ever non-Division I tennis player to advance to the semifinals of the Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships.

Gaspar beat Princeton's Kavitha Krishnamurthy, 6-0, 6-7, 6-3, and Baylor's Jahnavi Parekh, 6-3, 7-6.

Tennis victory for Rainbows

The Hawaii men's tennis team won five of six singles matches yesterday on the way to a 5-2 victory over visiting Gustavus Adolphus that ran its season record to 5-9.

Samoan sports banquet

Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, the Prime Minister of Samoa, will be the keynote speaker at tonight's annual Samoa International Sports Awards banquet at the Polynesian Cultural Center.

The event will honor athletes of Samoan descent, including members of the ninth All-Samoan all-star football team. Thirty-four players from Hawaii high schools were selected to the all-star team

QB Club to honor Keiter

Monday will be Les Keiter Day at the Honolulu Quarterback Club's regular weekly meeting, set for noon at the Pagoda Hotel.

Keiter will be officially recognized for his many contributions to sports in Hawaii and the mainland.

Other speakers will be Ron Mizutani, sports director at KHON TV 2; Dr. Edison Miyawaki, part owner of the Cincinnati Bengals, and Vince Goo, coach of the UH Wahine basketball team.
