Isle Australians
have a ball

Hawaii's Australian community turned out for the Australia Day Ball Saturday at the Waikiki Prince, sponsored by the Australian-American Chamber of Commerce and the Australian Consulate General. Two hours of cocktails were followed by dinner, with Australian food and beverages. The Aussies are a hardy people, and after a speech by Consul Mug shotGeneral Peter Woolcott, things really got rolling. The humor of emcee Murray Bawden, chamber prez, kept everyone jolly. Clyde Pound's solid band featured vocalist Lady Ann Braun, singer-drummer Alyn Erub, Billy Beimes, sax, bassist Steve Jones, Mike Morita on trumpet and guitarist Bryan Kessler. One rocker, Brian Macnish, a rugby playing attorney and financial specialist with Merrill Lynch, really got down. He got down so low he appeared to be doing the splits. C.G. Woolcott's wife, Tanya, is famous for her cakes. She has "sculptured" cakes for Elton John and Mick Jagger ...

Wong is flying high

Alan Wong is flying high with the success of his King Street and Liberty House Ala Moana restaurants and now he's really getting up there. Alan is the food consultant for Aloha Airlines first-class service to Oakland, which begins Feb. 14. "It's a challenge," Alan said Thursday as samples of his food were served at Liberty House. Wong team members on hand to see that all went well, included Charley Yoshida, Mark McGuffie, Gary Manago, Mona Teta, and chefs Barbara Stange and Steven Ariel, and waiters Emerson Green and Eric Betwee. Aloha CEO Glenn Zander, who greeted people at the tasting, is upbeat over landing Alan ... Honolulu Magazine's Hale Aina restaurant awards bash, with Wong's food, is tomorrow in the Pineapple Room at Liberty House, 6:30 p.m. Call 949-2526 for $75 tickets or buy them at the door. Part of the money will benefit UH culinary arts programs ...

Ivy Nagayama, former G.M. of Hoku's at the Kahala Mandarin, will run Sansei's Restaurant and Sushi Bar at Restaurant Row, opening in April. D.K. Kodama, whose Sansei on Maui is hot, has taken over the World Cafe, formerly Orchids. Kodama said he is putting "a little over a million" into the place. The new spot will be the same as the Maui Sansei, plus a little more, he said. There will be food until 1 a.m. Little Ivy, big when it comes to restaurants, is working with Kodama on Maui. "It's pretty exciting," she says ...

The Pro Bowl cheerleaders will appear at Rick Enos' Compadres for the 12th straight year tonight at 8 to sign autographs and pose for photos ... Ex-islander Jimmy Gomes sends word to Aaron's Skip Lambert that he will wed Cathy Valenzuela in June in Vegas, Jimmy's home ... The Academy of Arts' Academy Shop is holding a clearance sale through Tuesday ... Pure Heart, Dick Jensen, Jay Larrin and O'Brien Eselu are in the Aloha Friday Luncheon show in the Royal Hawaiian Monarch Room Friday. Frank Shaner and Brickwood Galuteria are emcees ...

Eovino's tasty developments

Realtor-developer Don Eovino was given a belated wedding toast Thursday night at his and wife Hiroko's Hawaii Kai home by dinner guests Don and Peggy Cowell and Gina Schultz. Don married Hiroko at 12:01 a.m. New Year's Day, perhaps breaking more than a few hearts. Don is no slouch when it comes to cooking. He wears a chef's hat reading, "The Mad Chef," and white jacket reading, "Eovino Trattoria," gifts from Dawn Isa, when whipping up delicious food for friends ...
