BYUH tennis star
advances in nationals

BYU-Hawaii's Petra Gaspar, the only small-college tennis player in the star-studded Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at Dallas, defeated Ana Friganovic of New Mexico, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-2, in a first-round match.

Gaspar earned a spot in the otherwise all-NCAA Division I singles field by winning the "Super Bowl" of small-college tennis last November.

She and doubles partner Tagifano So'onalole lost to Stanford's Laura Granville and Keiko Tokuda, 6-2, 7-5, in the quarterfinals after upsetting the second-seeded duo from Mississippi in the first round.

Doubleheader split for HPU

Hawaii Pacific and Western Oregon split a baseball doubleheader last night at Hans L'Orange Park, the Wolves winning the opener, 8-6, and the Sea Warriors taking the second game, 8-4.

Gabe Gerhardt had five hits and drove in four runs in the doubleheader for HPU (2-5) and Eric Dantley pitched a seven-inning five-hitter to win the nightcap.

Western Oregon (1-1) was led in the first game by Josh Nelson, who homered and had three RBIs.

Seasiders swept in softball

The BYU-Hawaii softball squad opened its season with two losses to Augustana College yesterday at Laie.

The Seasiders dropped 3-2 and 7-3 decisions, despite having early leads in both games.

BYUH lost in eight innings in the first game of the doubleheader, and lost control of the nightcap by giving up six runs in the fifth.

Mandi Fobert pitched all eight innings of the first game for BYUH and took the loss despite giving up no earned runs.

Lyza Halas had three hits and four RBIs in the doubleheader for the Seasiders.

Sportspersons of the Month

Tiffany Gois, a Roosevelt High School junior, and David Evans, a BYU-Hawaii senior, were named Sportspersons of the Month of January by the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Gois was honored for bowling a perfect game in the Aiea Whiz Kids Junior Program tournament on Jan. 15.

Evans led the BYUH basketball team to the top of the Pac West Conference, averaging 31.9 points a game for the month, including 48 points against Montana State-Billings. He leads NCAA Division II scorers.

Huge marlin reeled in

Daisuke Yamasaki's first Blue Marlin was a whopper.

Big Island visitor Yamasaki, fishing from Capt. John Rooney's Renegade on Jan. 30, caught a 1,213-pound Pacific Blue.

Weighed in at Honokohau Marina, it was the biggest marlin caught off the Kona Coast since John Livingbone and Capt. Darren Isaacs of the Spellbound landed a 1,356-pound Blue in 1992.

Thaxton wins volunteer event

Chris Thaxton, a first-year Sony Open in Hawaii volunteer, won the recent Volunteer Golf Tournament at the Waialae Country Club with a net 62 (81-19) on the par-70 course.

F.C. "Val" Valmoja was second at 63 (81-18) in a field of about 250 - a quarter of the number of volunteers who worked the Sony Open.
