Defending champion Jeff Cook of Indiana, and former winners Kevin Hayashi, Greg Meyer, Lance Suzuki and Damien Jamila are in the 188-player field for the Hawaii Pearl Open starting Friday at the Pearl Country Club.

The winning professional will get the $12,000 top prize in the 54-hole tournament - the state's first major championship of the year.

Also entered are Kaneohe's Dean Wilson, who played on the Asian Tour, and Japan PGA pros Kiyoshi Murota, who won in 1997, 1986 Pearl champion Akiyoshi Ohmachi and Hidemichi Tanaka, 12th on the JPGA money list last year.

Two Japanese seniors, Takaaki Kono and Masaru Amano, who combined for 35 victories on the JPGA regular tour, also have joined the field.

Other mainland pros in the field include Steve Schneiter, a former national PGA club pro champion from Utah, 1999 Kentucky PGA player of the year Buddy Harston and Scott Johnson, who won the 1996 Pacific Coast Amateur championship.

The cut will be 80 and ties after Saturday's second round.

David Ishii, who won the event five times, is the tournament director and will not play this time.

Vulcans sweep softball doubleheader

The University of Hawaii-Hilo swept Augustana (S.D.) College in a softball doubleheader yesterday.

The first game ended in dramatic fashion as Diana Kim slid under the catcher's glove in the bottom of the ninth on a single by Michelle LaRose to give UHH a 3-2 win.

The Vulcans (3-1) scored twice in the second inning to take the nightcap 2-0.

Former Oahu prep athletes honored

Two former Hawaii prep athletes made the Athletic Director's Honor Roll at Bradley (Ill.) University for their work in the fall 1999 semester.

Junior Nate Adams, who plays soccer for the Braves, graduated from Iolani. Senior Lindsay Chang prepped at Punahou and plays volleyball for Bradley.
