Hawaii’s Chan, Snider
get WAC baseball honors

Designated hitter Shane Chan and right-handed pitcher Rich Snider of the University of Hawaii have been named the Western Athletic Conference baseball player and pitcher of the week, respectively.

Chan was 5-for-9 (.556) at the plate with a double, three runs and six RBIs in the three-game series against San Diego last week.

Snider pitched 7 innings in an 8-1 victory over San Diego on Friday. He struck out eight, allowed four hits, one run and walked four in picking up his first win of the season.

Fencing at marketplace

The second annual Hawaii Open fencing meet will take place Saturday and Sunday at Aloha Tower Marketplace, with fencers from Hawaii and the mainland competing in foil, epee and sabre events.

The action begins at 10 a.m. both days.

All U.S. Fencing Association members are welcome to participate for a $25 registration fee per weapon. For more information, call 735-2558.

Special Na Koa luncheon

Na Koa, the Hawaii football support club, will have a special luncheon meeting Feb. 7 at the Stan Sheriff Arena hospitality room.

Coach June Jones and his staff will attend, along with special guests Gov. Ben Cayetano, UH Board of Regents chairman Donald Kim, UH president Kenneth Mortimer and athletic director Hugh Yoshida.

Lunch will begin at 11:30 a.m., with the program to follow. Featured speaker Jones will review the Rainbows' 9-4 turnabout last season and update the boosters on recruiting results.

Lunch costs $10 (validated parking included).

Wagner at football clinic

Former Hawaii head football coach Bob Wagner is one of several college coaches scheduled to speak during the fifth annual Nike Hawaii Football Clinic Feb. 25-27 at the Turtle Bay Hilton resort.

Others expected to conduct various sessions are Dennis Franchione, Dennis Erickson, Ron McBride, Buzz Preston, Dennis McKnight, Tommy Heffernan, Mike Major, Mark McElroy and Phil Zacharias.

Wagner, now an assistant coach at Arizona, will talk about the Wildcats' flex defense.

Cost of the clinic is $70 per coach by Feb.11 and $80 thereafter.

Spot qualifier in Kona

The winners and runners-up in a two-man best ball low-gross golf tournament to be played Feb. 13 at the Kona Country Club will receive two complimentary spots in the March 1 pro-am event of the LPGA Tour Takefuji Classic.

Entry fees are $75 per person, or $240 for two, which includes hotel room (double occupancy) at the Kona Surf. The entry deadline is Feb. 9.

UH tennis teams win

The University of Hawaii's top singles players, Antonio Garcia and Amandeep Singh, each scored straight-set victories yesterday as the Rainbows beat Loyola Marymount, 4-2, in a college men's tennis match.

The Hawaii men improved to 4-10 with the victory.

The Hawaii women's team defeated Cal State Fullerton, 7-2, with top singles player Nina Wenger leading the way with a straight-set win. The Wahine are 4-9.
