Jacobs not a betting man

IT took a full day to recover from Super Bowl XXXIV. My thoughts kept turning to old radio colleague Ron Jacobs, who was a Ram fan back in the early '70s when he was program director of KHJ in L.A., and who has been rabidly rooting for the team ever since, through a trip to Mug shotanother city and three Georgia Frontiere name pronunciation changes. Interestingly, the Rams (now in St. Louis) winning 23-16 over Tennessee, once the Houston Oilers, nets Jacobs not a nickel. He's tighter than a pair of Bruno Magli shoes in some respects and has never bet on his team. In fact, with the Rams eight point favorites, had he bet on them he'd have lost ... MY weekend was spent on Maui, and I watched the Super Bowl on the theater-sized screen erected at the Four Seasons. The banquet manager there, Kevin O'Kennedy -- Irish enough for you? -- plays with the Irish Hearts group at O'Toole's on Fridays, but this time the group flew to Maui and performed at Saturday night's production of Martin McDonough's "Beauty Queen of Lenane" at the Iao Theatre. They performed Irish songs, both happy and sad, before, during intermission, and at the conclusion of the gory Irish play ...

Maui's the place to visit

SEEMS I wasn't the only one who sought a getaway on the Valley Isle. No sooner did Sarah Jessica Parker win a Golden Globe Award for her role in "Sex and the City," than she took off on a Maui holiday, and dined with friends at Carelli's on the Beach ... And dining at A Pacific Cafe Maui was none other than Sarah Ferguson, who gained fame first as the Duchess of York, then as a Weight Watchers spokeswoman and now as a correspondent on NBC's "Today" show. After dinner, she made certain to shake hands with the kitchen workers and thank them for the "wonderful" dinner. Nobody would say if she splurged on a dessert ... WE visited with Eddie Petrillo, an old friend (and former restaurant and nightclub owner in San Francisco) at his new digs in Wailea. Petrillo, who was an arts commissioner and later member of the police commission in S.F. under Mayor Willie Brown, spends the bulk of his time at his elegant Wailea condo these days. While having pupus on the lanai, I noticed whales cavorting in the ocean between Wailea and West Maui. Petrillo was excited as he'd never seen a whale out of the water before, even if my description of their blowing, breaching and fluking sounded scandalous to him

FOUR of us drove up to the Diamond Resort for dinner, affording perhaps the finest view in Wailea. This Japanese owned resort is very Japanese --none of the books in the library there are in English, for example. So it was something of a shock that when we dined at the resort's Teppanyaki restaurant the chef appeared and introduced himself as "Michael from New York." His assistant also was haole. None of the flying forks you get at Benihana, however -- everything was elegantly prepared and served ...

Andre's secret

WANT to know the secret of how Andre Agassi rose like the phoenix to sweep through the best of the best and claim the Australian Open crown? He and the lovely Steffi Graf spent two weeks at Princeville on Kauai honing his game before heading Down Under. His game wasn't hurt by the fact he had his coach, Brad Gilbert, and practice partner, Sargis Sargesian, with him as well ...
