If defense wins championships, tonight's Oahu Interscholastic Association softball final will be anyone's game.

After "defensively" winning their respective semifinal games last night, defending champion Mililani and Waianae will square off for the OIA championship at 6 p.m. tonight at the Roosevelt High School Stadium.

According to Mililani head coach Mike Okimoto, 'D' will be the key to his team's success.

"We've got to keep playing good defense," Okimoto said. "That's the only thing that's keeping us in the ballgame right now. We're not a big team; We don't have the big hits like the other teams, so we've just got to play good 'D.' "

Defense paved the way last night for the Trojans (12-0) to make their way into the championship game by defeating Kailua, 1-0.

Mililani shortstop Tiara Keliinoi scored the game's only run in the second inning on a double by pitcher Johnna Rowland.

Rowland blanked the Surfriders on three hits.

"I think it was a defensive game," said Okimoto, whose team has won 28 consecutive OIA contests. "Kailua had some good hits but our center fielder did a good job."

Waianae's Jasmine Choy pitched a two-hitter in a 3-0 victory over Pearl City yesterday afternoon.

Waianae head coach Lance Watanabe said his team's recommitment and hard work after a 9-0 loss to Pearl City earlier in the season keyed the Seariders' victory in yesterday's rematch.

In tonight's championship game, defensive plays also will be vital to Waianae.

"We had a lot of outstanding defensive plays tonight," Watanabe said. "Our whole defense played real well. We need that tomorrow because Mililani is a sound team. I predict a low-scoring, close game."

Kailua will play Pearl City for third place and Kaimuki will meet Kalaheo for the last berth in the state championship tournament.

KAIMUKI 5, LEILEHUA 1: The Bulldogs' Dalia Solia tossed a two-hitter and limited the Mules to one unearned run.

KALAHEO 5, ROOSEVELT 0: Lehua Kiaaina scattered three hits and struck out 13 in the Mustangs' shutout of the Rough Riders.
