Melemai keeps Iolani unbeaten

OIA softball semifinals set

Bronson Melemai nailed a 3-pointer in the final seconds to give Iolani a 48-45 victory over University High in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys' basketball game at Klum Gym.

Chaz Hirata had 17 points for UHS (3-4) to lead all scorers. Bobby Nash (11 points) and Travis McGaughy (10) reached double-digits for the Raiders, who improved to 6-0.

At Damien, the Crusaders broke the game open with a 16-point second quarter and cruised to a win.

St. Louis (5-1) remains one game behind Iolani in the ILH. Damien fell to 0-6.

Leslie Wong scored a game-high 18 points for the Crusaders. Kalvin Koverman added 13.

Jarin Garma netted 12 points for the Monarchs.

Kim had four treys and 14 points for Punahou (4-2). Adi Muranovic led Maryknoll (3-3) with 15.

At Castle, the Knights maintained their one-game lead in the OIA East, handing Roosevelt its first loss of the season.

Castle (6-0) opened up a 43-28 lead heading into the final quarter, and held off a rally by the Rough Riders (5-1).

Paul Collins scored 17 points for the Knights. Dayton Aberilla chipped in with 14 points.

Roosevelt got 13 points from Van Dorsey and 12 from Chad Kapanui.

At Kalaheo, the Mustangs rebounded from a loss to top the Tigers.

Kalaheo's 76-game OIA win streak was halted by Castle earlier in the week.

Ikaika Francis scored 12 points for Kalaheo (5-1), and 11 other players got into the scoring column for the Mustangs.

McKinley's Jay-R LaForteza led all scorers with 13 points. The Tigers fell to 1-5.

At Kalani, the Governors used the one-two punch of Kenneth Gasilos and Nalo Cabuyaban to defeat the Falcons.

Gasilos poured in 32 points, and Cabuyaban added 22 as Farrington improved to 3-2.

Kalani's Ahren Kersting popped in 17, including four treys. The Falcons fell to 1-5.

OIA softball semifinals set

Kalaheo advanced to today's semifinals of the OIA softball tournament on the strength of a pitching gem by Lehua Kiaaina.

The Mustangs' hurler threw a complete game shutout, beating Campbell, 2-0, while allowing only three hits and striking out 12.

Tiffany Whitlock went 2-for-3 for the Mustangs and Mahina Lealao had two hits for the Sabers.

In other games, Kaimuki beat Aiea, 4-3, and Leilehua beat Kalani, 11-1.

The Mustangs will face defending champion Mililani today at 3 p.m, at the Trojans' field. Also, Leilehua plays at Kailua, Kaimuki is at Waianae, and Roosevelt plays Pearl City at Kaimuki, at 3 p.m.
