Akebono sole leader
again at New Year’s

TOKYO, Jan. 18 (Kyodo) - It was case of musical chairs again Tuesday at the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament as yokozuna Akebono retook sole possession of the lead after sekiwake Musoyama sputtered to his second defeat at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan.

Attempting his umpteenth comeback from injury, Akebono again looked wobbly on his feet, but had size and power in reserve, playing pinball with No. 3 maegashira Kotonishiki (2-8) before flattening him to the dirt surface to up his record to 9-1 in the 15-day meet.

Joint overnight leader Musoyama, meanwhile, saw stars after a clash of heads at the charge against fellow sekiwake Tochiazuma.

Musoyama pedaled furiously, as if running on a treadmill, to regain his equilibrium, but never recovered his composure and Tochiazuma, showing excellent lower-body technique, pulled out a nifty throw for his sixth win of the tournament.

Up-and-coming Miyabiyama won a bruising komusubi battle against Tosanoumi (4-6) to join Musoyama and rank-and-filers Chiyotenzan and Kyokutenho at 8-2 and remain in the championship hunt.

Miyabiyama, who upset Akebono on Monday, refused to flinch as Tosanoumi got in some stinging slaps to the face and, spotting his chance, bulldozed forward to leave his opponent in a crumpled heap on the ringside cushions.

Yokozuna Takanohana avoided dropping his third straight as No. 4 maegashira Tochinonada (5-5) stumbled onto the seat of his pants like a toddler in a playpen to give the 20-time Emperor's Cup winner his seventh win against three losses.

Ozeki Dejima catapulted out sekiwake Takanonami, who needs 10 wins to regain his ozeki rank after a second straight losing record at the Kyushu tourney last November, leaving both wrestlers on 7-3.

Another ozeki, Chiyotaikai, got himself into trouble at the outset but pulled out a Hail-Mary throw at the edge against No. 4 maegashira Akinoshima (6-4) to boost his record to 6-4.

Meanwhile, ozeki wannabe Kaio again illustrated why he has repeatedly failed to attain sumo's second highest rank as the sekiwake huffed and puffed for an ugly win - his sixth of the tourney - against second-ranked maegashira Kotonowaka (4-6).

No. 13 maegashira Kyokutenho of Mongolia patiently levered out 11th-ranked Tokitsuumi (6-4) to improve to 8-2, while his countryman Kyokushuzan, a No. 6 maegashira, went to his bag of tricks to fling down 12th-ranked Ohinode (3-7) for just his third win of the New Year.

One victory behind Akebono at 8-2 are four wrestlers - Musoyama, komusubi (junior champion second class) Miyabiyama, No. 11 maegashira (senior wrestler) Chiyotenzan and No. 13 maegashira Kyokutenho from Mongolia.

Wrestling at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena in downtown Tokyo, Akebono, or Chad Rowan, charged No. 3 maegashira Kotonishiki with a series of hand thrusts and pushed him down, leaving Kotonishiki at 2-8.
