Key hole

No. 17 Star Par 3 Star 189 yards

This is the signature hole at the Waialae Country Club course. If you look to the ocean side (left) of the 17th tee, you might even recall the Montgomery Clift character being shot and killed in the classic movie "From Here to Eternity."

Golf designer Rick Smith took into account the historical aspect of this hole when deciding to return the par 3 to its more original design with a diagonal green.

"It's a modern version of the old 17th green," Smith said. "And I think coming down the stretch with a back-left pin, it's going to be more like the old Hawaiian Opens used to be."

Last year, this hole didn't play that difficult. And yesterday, the PGA Tour professionals weren't bothered much with the changes as it turned out to be the third-easiest hole.

It surrendered 29 birdies and only 19 bogeys for a scoring average of 2.931. There were no double bogeys or the dreaded "others" listed when someone has a triple bogey or worse.

Of the 17 golfers who shot 67 or better, Jim Furyk, Stuart Appleby, Vijay Singh, Chris Riley and Jeff Gore birdied it. None of the 17 bogeyed it.

"The green is thinner, so it's going to require quite a golf shot at the pin on the final day," Smith said. "You know the winds are going to kick up and that will make that green firmer. That bunker long left will make it tougher to get closer to the hole."

Hardest hole

No. 2 Star Par 4 Star 426 yards

There were more double bogeys on this difficult hole than any other on the course. The drive through the trees is tough and the fountain near the lake comes into play if one is errant off the tee. This is traditionally one of the tougher holes on the course.

Average score -- 4.403
Eagles -- 0
Birdies -- 9
Pars -- 78
Bogeys -- 48
Double bogeys -- 8

Best hole

No. 18 Star Par 5 Star 551yards

This is traditionally a hole a golfer needs to birdie if he wants to do well in the four-day event. It's a great closing hole that allows the pro who is long and accurate off the tee to reach the green in two. There were more eagles in yesterday's round than any other hole.

Average score -- 4.306
Eagles -- 7
Birdies -- 87
Pars -- 49
Bogeys -- 1
Double bogeys -- 0

Ernie Els hits out of a bunker on 13. He's four shots off the pace.
