A Korean experience

The Korean experience in Hawaii is the subject of a conference this weekend sponsored by the University of Hawai'i Center for Korean Studies.

Local and international scholars will present papers on the history of Koreans in Hawaii and the lives of leaders in Hawaii's Korean community from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday. Admission to the presentations is free. For schedule details, call 956-7041.

In conjunction with the conference, "Korean Dance and Music: Tradition and Adaptation," a performance by dancers Peggy Myo-young Choy, Mary Jo Freshley and Trina Nahm-Mijo, and musicians Gregory Gi Yong Pai and Chan E. Park, will be staged at 8 p.m. tomorrow at Kennedy Theatre. The program will feature works that reflect traditional skills and creative adaptations. Free tickets may be obtained at the Center for Korean Studies or Kennedy box office. Call 956-7655.



Leeward Community College
The Peking Acrobats stage dramatic
balancing acts during performances.



Still time to catch Peking Acrobats

Tonight is your last chance to catch the Peking Acrobats, performing at 7 p.m. at the Leeward Community College Theatre.

The 28-member troupe continues to astonish international audiences with their precision tumbling, somersaulting and gymnastics; demonstrating wire walking, unicycle tricks and foot juggling.

Following the Hawaii performance, the troupe will continue its 50-city tour across America.

Tickets are $25 for adults; $18 for students, seniors and active military personnel; and $15 for children ages 12 and younger. For more information, call the theater box office at 455-0385.

St. John moves forward

Marie Gray, founder of St. John, will be on hand tomorrow night to show some of the line's cruise/spring 2000 collection and mark the store's new grand opening on the third floor of the Ala Moana Center.

The gala opening celebration will take place 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow with informal modeling throughout the store. Proceeds from sales at the event and through Jan. 15 will benefit the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Mention the academy and receive a 10 percent discount through the 15th.
