Hawaii Pacific University opens its 2000 baseball season Monday with the first of three consecutive doubleheaders with Sonoma State (Calif.) at Hans L'Orange Park.

Head coach Allan Sato has eight starters back from a team that posted a 32-12 record a year ago.

The Sea Warriors, an NCAA Division II independent, have 36 games scheduled this year, including three at defending national champion Cal State-Chico.

Unfortunately, the NCAA did not grant a waiver this year allowing NCAA Division I teams to play HPU and not have the game count against the 56-game limit.

This cost HPU a four-game series with Tennessee and single games with teams here to play the Hawaii Rainbows.

Key mound returnees include right-handers Eric Bentley and Keola McCallum, who tied the school record for wins (8) in a season in 1999.

Catcher Gabe Gerhardt (.416, 46 RBIs), outfielder Tom Peters (.299, 40 RBIs) and infielders Bryce Uegawachi (.279, 20 RBIs) and Shane Lyons (.266, 18 RBIs) are the top returning position players.

Transfers Tim Jewell, a 6-foot-5, 240-pound first baseman, and Scott Suraci, a 6-4, 210-pound outfielder, are expected to provide more power in the HPU lineup.

Sato, beginning his fifth season as head coach, has a career record of 79-68-1.
