But open fires are still prohibited

Kauai lands closed because of fire hazard will be re-opened in time for hunting and fishing during the next month.

Portions of Waimea Canyon and Kokee state parks, Puu Ka Pele Forest Reserve and the Kekaha game management area will re-open to the public on Saturday.

On Feb. 5, two areas will be opened to hunters with permits for feral-pig hunting; but the game-bird season will remain canceled.

On Feb. 12, the Department of Land and Natural Resources begins a special one-month season of trout fishing at the Kokee public fishing area for anglers with valid freshwater game fishing licenses.

Streams have not been stocked for seven years, so fishing may be poor.

Anglers driving to fishing areas in rainy weather are encouraged to use vehicles with four-wheel drive.

A fire danger period still remains in effect, which means open fires are prohibited.
