Cooking among friends

First Lady Vicky Cayetano shares her recipe for Sugar Snap Peas and Tofu Stir-Fry. Her husband, Ben, shares his formula for Chicken Adobo. Just like friends. Which is the point of "Cooking with Friends," a cookbook published by the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women to mark last September's Women's Health Month. The 300 recipes come from notable island women, the governor being an exception.

They are uncomplicated and locally flavored, such as this recipe for Guava Chicken from Allicyn Hikida Tasaka, the commission's executive director:

Marinate 5 pounds skinless chicken thighs overnight in 1 cup thawed guava juice concentrate, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon five-spice powder and 1/2 cup each oyster sauce, catsup, soy sauce and sugar. Broil or grill.

The cookbook sells for $8 if picked up at the commission's office or $11.20 if mailed. Call 586-5757 for information.
