Chime in on bells
for new year

Bells will ring in Honolulu at noon Saturday.

Members of the American Bell Association Aloha Chapter will gather to ring the State Liberty Bell outside the State Capitol, the Nagasaki Peace Bell and the bell from the U.S.S. Honolulu, all within walking distance.

The public is invited to bring their own bells to ring, and small bells will be distributed to create a joyful sound, which ABA Aloha Chapter president Elaine McCarty says is "far more pleasant to the ear than fireworks."

A schellenbaum, or ringing tree strewn with small bells, will also be carried from site to site.

Hawaii company on H&G

Hawaii designer Carey Smoot and his company, Source Tropical, will be featured on a "Dream Builder" segment scheduled to air 10:30 p.m. Thursday, repeating at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, on H&G TV.

Source Tropical promotes authentic reproductions of indigenous architecture and designs.

FANTASIA 2000
Rated G
From Disney comes a retooled "Fantasia" that only retains the "Sorcerer's Apprentice" segment from the 1940 original. The new version of the animated film now features Donald Duck in "Pomp & Circumstance," a geometric interpretation of Beethoven's 5th Symphony, an aerial whale ballet set to Ottorino Respighi's "Pines of Rome," and a narrative about life in 1930s Manhattan set to George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue."
