Cantlay had distinguished
military career

George G. Cantlay, formerly of Honolulu, a retired lieutenant general in the U.S. Army, died Monday in Williamsburg, Va.

He served in three wars. He was a tank company commander in World War II, and he was in the Korean War with the 7th Infantry Division. In the Vietnam War, he was assistant division commander of the 1st Infantry Division.

Cantlay served as deputy U.S. representative and then deputy chairman of the NATO Military Committee in Brussels, Belgium.

Cantlay received the Silver Star, Bronze Star for Valor, the Purple Heart, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Service Medal and Defense DSM.

He was born in Honolulu, graduated from Punahou School and attended the University of Hawaii before entering the U.S. Military Academy. He is survived by wife Wilhelmina Davison, sons George G. III and Donald D., daughter Carolyn Cantlay Hart, sister Elspeth Kerr, and six grandchildren. Services on the mainland. Ceferino P. Almondia, 91, of Kekaha, Kauai, a retired truck driver with Kekaha Sugar Co., died Sunday in Kauai Veterans Hospital. Russell S. Brown, 81, of Honolulu, a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force, died Monday in Honolulu. He was born in Shamokin, Pa. He is survived by wife Evelyn; sons Russell, Charles, Jeffrey and Kenneth; daughter Bonnie Feyen, and five grandchildren. Services: 4 p.m. tomorrow at Holy Nativity Church in Aina Haina. No flowers. "Chilo" Bacilio Cancel, 87, of Kailua died Sunday in Pearl City Nursing Home. He was born in Puunene, Maui. He is survived by brothers Christopher and Salvador, and sisters Rose Graham, Francis Angelica and Louise Becera. Graveside services: 10 a.m. tomorrow at Mililani Memorial Park.

Manuel Carvalho, 69, of Paia, Maui died Monday in Maui Memorial Hospital. Born in Paia, he is survived by wife Elsie; son Ralph; daughters Sandra and Eileen Carvalho and Jennifer Caires, and sisters Mary Jacinto, Lucy DeMello, Rita Sartos, Veronica Naole and Barbara Helm. Vernon L. Cullman, 86, of Kailua, a retired sergeant major with the U.S. Marine Corps, died Nov. 27 at home. Don D. Dulatre, 84, of Waipahu, a retired security officer for Hawaii Protective Association, died Nov. 17 in St. Francis-West Hospital. He was also a sergeant and World War II veteran for the Philippine Army.
