Barnes highlights the story of the islands from their geological birth down through the sovereignty movement of the late 1990s. The author touches upon the major personalities and events of Hawaii's past in a condensed story that includes facts about the events and people that have shaped modern life in Hawaii.

Bullet "Dear Hearts: Common Sense + Realistic Thinking (with a tickle of humor)": by Shiro "Mistah Saimin" Matsuo, $12.50 (sold at all Shiro's restaurants), 78 pages, Love Me Too Publishing, paperback.

Hawaii restaurateur Matsuo culls the wit and wisdom he has expressed in his weekly newspaper ads since 1970 for his book. Accompanying the collection of inspirational poems are a biographical sketch of the author, a sampling of the correspondence he has received regarding the poems, and some of his favorite recipes.

All profits from the sales of the the book will be donated to Hawaii charities.

Bullet "The Secret of Kualoa: A Sequel to 'The Microchip Caper' ": by Robert Graham, $4.95, 132 pages, Island Heritage , paperback

"The Secret of Kualoa" is a combination of an adventure mystery and a ghost story.

Thirteen-year-old Kai thinks he sees nightmarchers carrying torches down the side of Kualoa Mountain. He and his friends search for a burial cave in the mountains and confront the damage caused by the removal of a small statue from the cave.
