Young Oahu surfers Fred Patacchia Jr. and Jason Shibata stole the show during the opening day of the G-Shock Hawaiian Pro surf meet at Haleiwa yesterday, signaling the start of the 29th annual men's Vans G-Shock Triple Crown of Surfing.

Patacchia and Shibata made grand entries into the event, demonstrating perfect wave selection in sets of 4-5 feet and critical maneuvering to advance ahead of a strong international field.

Newly crowned world junior champion Joel Parkinson of Australia blitzed his opening heat to get past the Hawaii trio of Bruce Irons, Taku Horie and Roy Powers. Irons was the shock elimination of the day, finishing fourth in the heat.

Women's competition was scheduled to begin this morning.
