First-graders from Kauluwela Elementary School got to take
part in a tree-planting ceremony yesterday at the Liliuokalani
Botanical Garden in recognition of Arbor Day. Above, Jessica
Wong applies a shovel to a mao hau hele, or yellow hibiscus.
Below, the children participate in a chant led by Hawaiian studies
teacher Noelani Canon, with a newly planted Hawaiian wiliwili tree
in front. This is the 21st year Honolulu has been designated a
"Tree City USA" by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
Arbor Day is celebrated in Hawaii on the first Friday of November.
