Millennium Moments

Legendary point

KA LAE on the Big Island has gained distinction on a couple of fronts.

Geographically, Ka Lae, or South Point, is the southernmost tip not only of Hawaii, but of all 50 states, says "Place Names of Hawaii" by Mary Kawena Pukui, Samuel H. Elbert and Esther T. Mookini.

In folklore, a rock in the sea there -- "pohaku wa'a Kauhi" -- is believed to have been a canoe from Kahiki.

Also at Ka Lae is a preserved fishing shrine which was taboo to women, but today still receives placed offerings, the authors say. Nearby is a stone called "pohaku o keau" -- "stone of the current" or "stone of the times" -- because of the belief that a change in government was coming if the stone turned over.

MADD schedules 5K run/walk for a sober, safe holiday season

The public is invited to kick off the 1999 holiday season with fun, safe and sober alcohol-free festivities at the annual MADD Dash 5K fun-run/walk at 4 p.m. Nov. 21 in downtown Honolulu.

MADD Dashers receive a T-shirt and chances to win prizes, including a weekend trip for two to a neighbor island and $500 worth of Tesoro gasoline. Musical entertainment and refreshments will be provided.

The fee is $18 for adults and $10 for children under 12 years old. Money raised will help MADD Hawaii's Victim Services program and Youth Outreach program that reach more than 10,000 people.

"The 1999 MADD Dash is a great example of how you can celebrate the holidays, have lots of fun for the entire family and not endanger your own life, or the lives of others, by drinking and driving," said Kathy Nelson, MADD Hawaii board president.

In Hawaii, five people were killed in alcohol-related traffic fatalities during the 1998 holiday season.

MADD Dash registration forms are available at Tesoro Hawaii stations, 7-11 stores, at running stores and at state libraries, or by calling MADD Hawaii at 532-6232.

Box jellyfish expected to invade next week

Refunds will be made for Super Prix tickets

Ticket refunds for the canceled Hawaiian Super Prix will be made by Ticket Plus Inc.

Refunds will be paid by check, said Manuel Sanchez, the company's chief executive officer, and will include the ticket price and service charge.

Ticket Plus spokeswoman Melissa Tanji said the company has the addresses of people who bought tickets.

The Hawaiian Super Prix was scheduled for Nov. 13 and was billed as having the largest prize in auto racing.

It was canceled this month because of financial problems.

Park fees proposal shaky

A plan to charge fees to reserve city facilities may be dead before it even becomes a bill, much less a law.

City Council Chairman Jon Yoshimura yesterday said he opposes park user fees.

"There's virtually no support for it on the Council," Yoshimura said, adding that he's spoken to other colleagues who don't favor the plan. "It's something we want to put to rest very quickly."

Councilwoman Rene Mansho told reporters on Wednesday that she had asked city attorneys to draft legislation that would assess fees whenever a public recreational facility is reserved for exclusive use.

Reports of the plan prompted an outcry from Hawaii's organized sports community.

Yesterday, Mansho emphasized that the plan is not something she supports, but that she still believes the issue should be discussed.

Mansho said the idea came up when golfers -- now facing a $2-a-round fee hike -- told her it was unfair they were being singled out for an increase.
