GTE Wireless picks leader for isle unit

Lindsey Burroughs has been named president of GTE Wireless-Hawaii, leading the business in what she said is one of the most-penetrated markets for wireless phones, with 42 percent of local households using them. A former GTE Corp. regulatory affairs manager, Burroughs was named area president of GTE Wireless in San Diego early last year. She keeps the San Diego post and will run both areas from there. Tony Simpson has been moved to Hawaii to the new post of area general manager. He was general manager for business sales at GTE Wireless-Midwest.

Marriott to redevelop resort as time share

The former Stouffer Waiohai resort on Kauai is to become a time-share operation of Marriott Vacation Club. Renamed Marriott's Waiohai Beach Club, it will have 227 two-bedroom villas, a restaurant, a retail shop and other facilities. The hotel, one of the last major resorts on Kauai to remain closed since Hurricane Iniki in 1992, is scheduled to reopen in late 2001.

Marriott already operates the Kauai Marriott Resort, Marriott's Kauai Beach Club and Marriott's Maui Ocean Club.

Nauru delegation dedicates complex

A delegation from Nauru, including members of the island-state's Parliament and the Nauru Phosphates Royalties Trust, yesterday formally dedicated the Hawaiki Tower on Piikoi Street, a 432-unit luxury condominium next to the Nauru Tower. They said the construction loan to a development arm of the trust has been paid off ahead of schedule. The South Pacific island got its wealth from the mining and sale of phosphate deposits built up by bird droppings. The island's phosphate deposits are running out and the trust is looking at its many international investments to bring in income for its people.
