Isle baseball whiz
still with the game as
coach, manager

Question: What ever happened to a 1970 first baseman in the local Puerto Rican League who later made it big in the majors?

Answer: Chris Chambliss spent 17 years with three major league teams, playing in three World Series for the New York Yankees.

The son of Cmdr. Carroll Chambliss, a Navy chaplain at Pearl Harbor and Aiea resident, he played with the Jolly Rogers here and was the No. 1 winter draft pick, Jan. 17, 1970, signing initially with Cleveland.

The young Chambliss had attracted attention here in a game at Lanakila Field, hitting a long home run over the apartments across School Street.

Chambliss, 22, was 1971 rookie of the year with Cleveland.

His lifetime major league batting average was .279, with 185 home runs.

Most recently a Yankees' batting coach, Chambliss has been a successful minor league manager and may eventually manage in the majors.
