Pearson’s shutoutHawaii struck quickly in each half and freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Pearson recorded her first complete-game shutout as the Wahine defeated Eastern Washington, 2-0, yesterday in a nonconference soccer match.
The victory ended UH's two-match losing streak and left the Wahine with a 5-4-1 record entering the start of
Western Athletic Conference play this weekend.
Sophomore strikers Veronica Flores and Jennifer Starsiak each scored their fourth goals of the season.
Flores, making her first start of the season, scored one minute, 15 seconds after the opening whistle with an assist from freshman K.C. Cornett.
Starsiak then took a pass from Wendy Miyashiro and scored one minute into the second half.
The assist was the 10th for Miyashiro, tying her for the career lead with Nicki Arakawa.
Pearson, who UH head coach Pinsoom Tenzing wanted to have playing time on this road trip, was called upon to make four saves.
The 5-foot-8 Los Gatos, Calif., resident had played in five previous matches for a total of 177 minutes before yesterday's 90-minute effort.
The UH defense limited Eastern Washington (1-8-0) to just five shots. The Wahine took 18 shots on the Eagles goal.
Eastern Washington has been outscored 30-8 in nine matches.
The match was played at Cal State Sacramento's campus field.
The Wahine are 2-2 on the road in '99. Four of Hawaii's six WAC matches are on the mainland.
The first two are this week. The Wahine play at Fresno State Friday and San Jose State Sunday.
