BYUH supplants HPU
in Division II rankings

Brigham Young-Hawaii has claimed the No.1 spot in the nation among NCAA Division II women's volleyball teams for the first time this season after consecutive victories over previously top-ranked Hawaii Pacific last week.

The Seasiders (12-1) topped the AVCA Coaches Poll released yesterday, moving up from No.2 in the previous balloting and picking up 23 of 25 first-place votes. West Texas A&M (17-0) got the other two.

The Sea Warriors of HPU, who held the top spot throughout the first month of the season slipped to No.2 after suffering their first and second setbacks in 13 matches.

Unbeaten Wahine still third in Division I poll

The Hawaii Wahine, unbeaten in 11 volleyball matches this season, remained No. 3, behind Pacific and Penn State, in the latest AVCA/USA Today Coaches' rankings of NCAA Division I teams.

Top-ranked Pacific, also 11-0, had 1,496 points and 56 first-place votes. UH received the other four first-place votes but trailed Penn State (12-1) in points, 1,419-1,401.

St. Louis No. 3 nationally, Kamehameha also ranked

St. Louis held its position as the nation's third-ranked high school football team - and best in the West - in the weekly Fox Fab 50 rankings while Kamehameha made its first appearance in the poll at No. 11 in the West Region.

The Crusaders and Warriors, both 6-0, collide in a key Interscholastic League of Honolulu matchup Friday night at Aloha Stadium.

UH golfers snowed out in Colorado tournaments

The Hawaii Rainbows finished fifth in a men's golf tournament and UH wound up 10th in a women's tournament when the final round of each Colorado event was canceled yesterday because of snow yesterday.

Colorado won the Colorado State Ram Intercollegiate tourney at Fort Collins with a 36-hole aggregate of 561.

Hawaii, which had a 581 total, was paced by freshman Jamie Matsumura, whose 72-72-144 was good for a share of 15th place, six strokes behind co-medalists Tobias Forsgren of Colorado and Thomas Pye of Texas-Arlington.

In the Heather Farr Memorial Invitational at Louisville, Colo., the Wahine shot a two-day total of 616, 24 shots behind first-place San Jose State.

Angie Yoon of Nevada took individual honors with a 141 total. Linda Appelblad was UH's low scorer at 151, tying for 17th place.

UH-Hilo golfers finish 10th in Husky Invitational golf

The Hawaii-Hilo men's golf team finished 10th in the Husky Invitational at Port Orchard, Wash., yesterday.

Shane Hoshino shot a final-round 75 to pace the Vulcans with a 54-hole total of 229.

Stanford won the tournament with a 1,106 total and Alex Aragon of the Cardinal was the individual medalist at 214.

UH-Hilo had a 1,183 total.

Super Prix race spokesman Andretti to visit Schofield

Legendary race car driver Mario Andretti, the official spokesman for the upcoming Hawaiian Super Prix, will visit Schofield Barracks tomorrow.

Andretti will attend a training exercise from 1-3 p.m. and will meet Post Exchange patrons at the Main Exchange from 3-4 p.m.

Promising season opener for UH swimming teams

Hawaii's men's and women's swimming teams opened their season in the Prince Kuhio Invitational Monday at the UH pool, competing with the Duke Kahanamoku Swim Team in four relay events.

The UH Wahine had a time of 1 minute, 50.50 in the 200 medley relay and were clocked in 1:38.27 in the 200 freestyle relay, close to NCAA qualifying times.

The UH men finished within NCAA qualifying standards in the 220 medley relay (1:27.99) and the 200 free relay (1:21.02).
