Sheehan nuptials
draw socialites

BACK in the old days of newspapering, there used to be "society" columns telling what the rich folks were up to. (The San Francisco Chronicle still has one, in fact, ably reported -- often tongue in chic -- by Pat Steger.) If suchMug shot a thing still existed in Hawaii, the wedding celebration of Annie Corboy and Michael Keola Sheehan, scion of the Kauai Sheehans, would certainly have merited attention. To wit: The Hanalei wedding attracted such luminaries as Forbes 400 billionaire Barbara Cox Anthony and husband J. Garner Anthony, Sam Cooke, Zadok Brown, Jimmy Pfluger, Duncan McNaughton, Don Carswell and Dr. John Corboy, among others. Stephanie Smart and Barry Yap sang under a gorgeous Hanalei moon at the old Wilcox estate, built in 1875 -- pre-Star-Bulletin even! The bride and her dad, Bob Corboy, arrived on a carriage drawn by two magnificent Clydesdales and Patsy Wilcox Sheehan danced the hula. A huge fireworks display helped light up Hanalei Bay for what was surely the event of the year on Kauai ...

THEN there's Cathy Lee, president of Mix It Up! Productions, who is used to large parties, having co-chaired the 1999 Heart Ball for 1,100 and staged a business mixer for 650. She's now focusing on her biggest event to date: motherhood. She and hubby Dr. Darrell Lee welcomed their first child, Nicolette Olivia, and Cathy is busy entertaining her ...

New beginnings

DON'T know how much you're looking forward to this weekend, but former Lodge at Koele chef Todd Carlos is sweating nickels. For one thing, he's now the corporate executive chef for Aaron's, the name which replaces Nicholas Nickolas for the luxury restaurant atop the Ala Moana Hotel. Carlos is overseeing the grand re-opening Sunday following a $1 million renovation, a benefit for the Hawaii Restaurant Association and Hale Aina Ohana scholarship programs. He's also finishing Lamaze classes and putting final touches on a nursery, as wife Thelma is expecting their first child on Monday, and he's hoping and praying the obstetrician isn't 24 hours late on the due date ...

THIS could fall under political correctness personified, but when Ray Sweeney of Sweeney Communications went to get his driver's license renewed, he noticed a sign reading "Driver's License Test Room." What gave him pause was the fact that the sign was also written in Braille! He didn't have the heart to ask if the test was in Braille also ... Brett Jones, 26-year-old, Vietnam War-born daughter of former correspondent Bob Jones and wife Denby Fawcett, has left her 18-month tour as a U.N. field officer in Croatia and is now working on a master's degree in International Studies at the London School of Economics ...

Ako, ah, so

FOLLOWING the 25th anniversary salute to NBC's "Saturday Night Live" by present and former SNL comics Sunday night, Diane Ako came on Channel 8 and did the news an hour or so later than usual. And when I awoke at 5 a.m., I turned on the TV and there she was again, doing the morning news show with Guy Hagi. Put that young woman in the Ironman Triathlon! ... By the way, word from Seattle is that former Miss Teenage Honolulu Lori Matsukawa has been replaced on KING-TV's late newscast by former "Dateline NBC" correspondent Margaret Larson, and has been transfered to a "sister station," KONG. She must feel a bit like Fay Wray doing the KING/KONG shuffle ...
