Sounds of old Hawaii take
stage at steel guitar festival

The Halekulani Hotel will present an encore of artists for its annual Steel Guitar Festival that begins tomorrow.

Several guitarists who appeared in last year's programs, including Jerry Byrd, Edward Punua and Hanalei de Willigen, will perform at the hotel's House Without a Key through Sept. 18.

New to the lineup is Hoku-award winner BB Shawn, who will perform on slack key with steeler Bobby Ingano.

The sensual sound of the steel guitar isn't unusual at the Halekulani, said publicist Joyce Matsumoto. House musicians -- the Islanders and the Hiram Olsen Trio -- are always on hand.

"The House Without a Key is one of the few places where you can listen to the steel guitar 365 days a year," Matsumoto said. "The sound is nostalgic of Hawaii."

The entertainment, part of the Aloha Festivals, begins at 5 p.m. with guests artists performing from 8 to 8:30 p.m.

The schedule:

bullet Tomorrow, Jerry Byrd and the Hiram Olsen Trio

bullet Sunday, Isaac Akuna and the Islanders

bullet Monday, Hanalei de Willigen and the Islanders

bullet Tuesday, Edward Punua and the Islanders

bullet Wednesday, Bobby Ingano, BB Shawn and the Trio

bullet Thursday, de Willigen and the Islanders

bullet Sept. 17, Al Greene Jr. and the Trio; Sept. 18

bullet Byrd and the Trio
