Kahuku scored twice on fourth- down situations and held off McKinley in the final minutes to earn a 14-12 Oahu Interscholastic Association victory in the mud at Roosevelt last night.

With less than two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, McKinley (0-2) drove down to Kahuku's 10-yard line. An illegal shift penalty pushed the Tigers back five yards and with only nine seconds left, Red Raider Aaron Fransisco picked off a pass at the goal line to seal the win.

The Red Raiders (2-0) trailed 6-0 at halftime but ran the ball straight through the heart of the Tiger defense on their first possession of the third quarter to take the lead for good.

Kahuku senior running back D.J. Nawahine burst through the line on fourth-and-inches, bounced off a tackler and rumbled 20 yards for the score. The extra point put Kahuku ahead, 7-6.

The Red Raiders added to the lead just before the end of the quarter. They got the ball at their 34 but senior running back Kala Latuselu picked up a quick 46 yards on three plays.

Three more running plays netted nine yards, and Kahuku was faced with a fourth down at the 12. After a timeout, and with the Tigers crowding the line to stop a running play, Kahuku opted to throw.

Inoke Funaki hit a wide-open Noah Padeken for a touchdown. The point-after widened Kahuku's lead to 14-6.

"It was an easy call because they were really pinching in on the inside," said Kahuku head coach Sivaki Livai of his decision to throw.
