Taking Notice

Honors earned

An Outrigger Hotels executive has been named to the Disciplinary Board of the Hawaii Supreme Court. Chief Justice Ronald T.Y. Moon appointed Jean E. Rolles to fill the unexpired term of Jane Tatibouet, who resigned from the board.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has honored Hawaii Sea Grant's Extension Director Bruce Miller, state Rep. Brian Schatz and Youth for Environmental Service Executive Director Sean Casey. The trio was recognized for their creation of Youth for Environmental Service, a program which educates and engages K-12 students in discussions of local environmental issues and involves them in restoration projects.

Anna Alvaro, president of the Honolulu Ladies Auxiliary No. 1540 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, attended a leadership conference in Kansas City.

Childcare Professionals of the Year are Lani Au of Keiki Hau'oli Children's Center at Honolulu Community College, and Iris Haji, a family child care provider in Kaneohe.

They were recognized by the Good Beginnings Alliance and also received the second annual Working Together for the Children Award.

Inducted into the circle of Honor were Carol-Ann Yonezawa-Carvalho of Kama'aina Kids in Honolulu; Anne Mitson of Laie Head Start; Sheri Lyn Galarza of Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate Kona Pre-School; and Kay Rabot of All Saints Preschool on Kauai.

Carol M. Miyashiro of Honolulu has been named chief pretrial services officer for the district of Hawaii. Since 1995 she held the same position for the western district of Washington for the United States District Court.

Abbie Yuen-Fleming was named the top account executive at Bank of America Mortgage for March.

Virginia B. Macdonald was honored with a position in the American Institute of Architects' prestigious College of Fellows, awarded to members who have made contributions of national significance to the profession.

Academic honors

Takako Kuniyuki of Honolulu was given a Contemporary Writing and Production Award at Berklee College of Music for outstanding musical and academic achievement.

Punahou School students Emily Marr, Lauren Yamada and Melanie Curtin participated in international study programs promoted by the Wo International Center, founded in 1990 with gifts from James and Robert Wo and the K.J. Luke families.

Marr won a scholarship to study in New Delhi and stay with a host family. Yamada received the Nanzan University Scholarship for a year of study in Japan. Curtin spent a month in Osaka, Japan, this summer as the Lions Club of Honolulu's Youth Exchange Program recipient.

Jared David Acoba, a University of Hawaii medical student, has received the Annual Research Award, sponsored by the Philippine Medical Association of Hawaii and Pharmacare.

Winners at Work has awarded scholarships made possible by the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation to Carl Cristi, John Yu, Gloria Tagama, Shamieka Smith, Harry Kahue, John Salvadore, Glenn Kishi, Clayton Kira, Barbara Osumi and Rose Pou.
