Hawaii slugs into
U.S. final of Big League
World Series

Paki Lum led a 15-hit attack as Hawaii defeated Tucson, 11-5, to advance to the USA championship game of the Little League Big League World Series yesterday.

Lum went 3-for-4 with two doubles and 3 RBIs as Hawaii improved to 3-1 in the baseball tournament for 16-18 year olds.

Hawaii plays Florida (4-0) today with the winner moving on to tomorrow's World Championship game against either Canada or Puerto Rico. That game will be shown on ESPN2 at 4 p.m. Hawaii time.

Hawaii's loss in the tournament was to Florida, 11-9.

Hawaii finishes fifth in AAU tourney

Davis Chappins went 2-for-2 as the Waikiki Beachboys beat Tulsa, 8-5, to take fifth place in the AAU National Championship baseball tournament yesterday at Tulsa, Okla.

Hawaii finished with a 10-1 record in the tournament for boys 13-under.

Mililani wins first two at softball nationals

Mililani Prep won its first two games at the 18-and-under Amateur Softball Association Nationals on Tuesday at Sioux Falls, S.D.

A complete-game victory for pitcher Mitzi Ing helped Mililani finish off the Bridgecity Express in the first game, 8-3.

The win was highlighted by a fifth-inning triple play. Ing caught a line drive and caught a runner by throwing to Lei Hashida at first base. Hashida threw to Nancy Vega at second base to get another runner.

In the second game, Mililani squeaked past the Vancouver Express, 8-7, in 9 innings.

Tied at 5 in the ninth, international tie-breaker rules, in which a runner is placed at second base at the start of an inning, were used. Vancouver took a 7-5 lead in the top of the inning, but Mililani scored three in the bottom of the inning.
