Hawaiian spirit fills
Ho‘ike ’99 through
music, dance

Ho'ike '99 takes place on the Windward side this weekend, headlined by Kawaikapuokalani Hewett, with Kana'e and Kuhai Halau O Kawaikapuokalani Pa 'Olapa Kahiko.

There will be two shows, at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday in the Castle High School Ron E. Bright Auditorium.

On the bill for the 2 p.m. show are Olomana, Kawai Cockett and the Lim Family. Joining the halau for the the 7 p.m. show will be Guy Cruz and BB Shawn, Loyal Garner, Genoa Keawe and the Lim Family.

Several other halau will be featured at both performances, including the Keala School of Hula from Kobe, Japan, led by kumu hula Keala Kaoru Maeda.

Donations are $12.50 in advance, or $15 the day of the show. The fees are for one performance only. Call Alice at 235-3603 or the Ho'ike hot line at 235-8211 for tickets or information.

Funds raised will help Kuhai Halau O Kawaikapuokalani Pa Olapa Kahiko in its educational mission.

Now in its 22nd year, the Ho'ike was founded by Hewett as an exhibition of music and dance as performed by his halau. Among the halau's goals are to study and advance concepts of Hawaiian spirituality, study and implement fundamentals of hula, interpret songs and poems through hula and promote Hawaiian language and crafts.

The first three Ho'ike's took place in the outdoor setting of Heeia State Park. Over the years, the event has grown to embrace more contemporary forms of Hawaiian music.
