Bishop Museum



Exhibit showcases
master quilter

Works by Deborah Kakalia, master of the Hawaiian quilt, are on view today and tomorrow at the Bishop Museum's Atherton Halau.

The exhibition, featuring more than a dozen quilts, wall hangings and pillows made by Kakalia, her granddaughter Nalani Gourd and Kakalia's students, runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days and admission is free.

Kakalia is highly regarded at home and around the world. She has been teaching the art of the Hawaiian quilt for more than 44 years and continues to hold quilting demonstrations and workshops from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Bishop Museum.

Businessman leads
Oahu court

King Clyde Kelekoma Kaimuloa and Queen Charlene Kaohunani Carla Sakaguchi will preside over Oahu's Royal Court for the 53rd annual Aloha Festivals.

Kaimuloa lives in Palolo and is the owner of Holopapa Wood Flooring. Kailua resident Sakaguchi is a day care provider.

Rounding out the court are Princess Deanna Kaluapiilahaina Covaco, a senior at Kamehameha Schools; and Princess Jaclyn Kauiokalani Lee, a junior at Kamehameha.

The four volunteers, all of Hawaiian descent, will be trained to represent island monarchs of the 18th-19th centuries.

Festival events begin this month and last until October.

“Nation Within: The Story of America’s Annexation of the Nation of Hawaii,” 8 p.m., KHET/ PBS. Sixty-minute version of Tom Coffman’s 90-minute documentary that examined the motivations behind the Aug. 12, 1898, annexation of the Hawaii Islands by the United States.
