Federal prison near airport
to be ready next year

Question: What ever happened to the federal detention center at the airport?

Answer: Work on the $65 million federal detention center being built by the federal Bureau of Prisons at Elliot Drive and Aokea is on schedule and should be completed by November 2000, according to Howard Hort, construction site manager.

Groundbreaking for the 12-story, 558-cell center was last October.

The cells have a capacity to hold 670 inmates. The state is now negotiating with the Bureau of Prisons to try to lease some its cells to ease the overcrowding in state facilities.
