Telethon volunteers sought

Volunteers are being sought for the Jerry Lewis MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) Telethon set to air Labor Day weekend, Sept. 5 and 6.

Volunteer activities include answering phones, helping with pre-telethon mailings, distributing posters, transporting supplies, greeting guests, tallying pledge slips, addressing envelopes, clean-up, and more.

To volunteer call the Aiea MDA office at 486-2697. Volunteers are also needed year 'round and most need to be at least 16.

MDA is a national voluntary health agency dedicated to finding treatments and cures for 40 neuromuscular diseases affecting more than a million Americans.

Speak Hawaiian over lunch

Registration is being taken for The Friends of 'Iolani Palace Hawaiian language program, "Brown Bagging to Conversational Hawaiian: A Language Awareness and Conversational Class for the Busy Person."

The course is designed for working adults who may not have the time that other language programs require. Students will be learn pronunciation and basic conversational skills, with no homework or tests given, to create a noncompetitive learning environment.

Beginners meet every Wednesday (except holidays) in the old Archives on the Waikiki side of the Palace Grounds, with an option of starting at 11 a.m. or noon, or part of both sessions, depending on your schedule. Cost: $5.

No textbook is required, just pencil and paper. To register call Keola at 522-0827 to reserve your space. Classes begin Sept. 29.

Got a story about dad?

Stories about fatherhood are being sought for the book "Chicken Soup for the Father's Soul."

Various "Chicken Soup for the Soul" titles have sold more than 45 million copies around the world.

A "Chicken Soup" story is inspirational, sometimes emotional and often humorous true story about an event, relationship, lesson learned or dream fulfilled that helps readers to connect with basic principles they can use in their own lives. The average/maximum word count is 750/1200 words.

Some chapter headings include "Dad at Work," "A Grandfather's Love," "Thank You, Dad," "Sports Stories and Other Adventures," "A Father's Wisdom" and "A Father's Courage." Send stories to: Chicken Soup for the Father's Soul, 3104 E. Camelback Road #531, Phoenix, AZ 85016. Or address e-mail to soup4soul@home.com. Materials will not be returned.

For each story selected, a 50-word biography will be included about the author and a permission fee of $300 will be paid for one-time rights.

There are no limits to the number of submissions. The deadline is Aug. 27.
