Sax and Jones off the air

ISLAND radio has been going through some changes of late. Oh, there are the givens: Uncle Tom Moffatt on 107.9 FM has been playing rock 'n' roll since Marconi, for example. But while KSSK continues to rule the mornings with Perry & Price, the station has dropped to No. 2 throughout the day to KCCN. Ted Sax, who's been somewhere on isle airwaves almost as long as Moffatt, is taking some time off from K-108 toMug shot attend to some health problems. His daughter, Jan Sax, flew into town to help look after him and he can be e-mailed, tedsax@go.com, should you be inclined. He's been doing talk radio there, as Bob Jones was at KCCN before resigning three weeks ago. A report he'd retired prompted this response: "Never." Jones merely felt the shifting of his time slot cost him his listenership, so he's now devoting his time to columns on various subjects for such publications as MidWeek, Hula.net, Pixi.com and Aloha.com ...

MORE radio news -- doing a radio column was how Herb Caen got started in San Francisco, by the way -- ex-TV newsman Bob Basso will be interviewed about his new book by Diana Wiley on her KHVH talk program, "50-Plus and Fabulous," on Saturday at 8 a.m. ... And as ironic as it seems, "Territorial Airwaves," the 20-year-old radio show celebrating pre-Statehood music (hosted by Harry B. Soria Jr.) has gone digital and is certified as Y2K compliant. It's also broadcasting worldwide via http://www.alohajoe.com ...

Half a century old

KAHUKU Hospital celebrates its 50th year Saturday, about as many as "Baywatch Hawaii" co-stars Stacy Kamano and Mike Newman have between them. The two will be on hand to help Kahuku celebrate its Golden Anniversary, and the first 300 people of whatever age who can prove they were born at Kahuku Hospital will get a "Kahuku Born and Proud" T-shirt. They might give one to Stacy anyway, even though she was born in Waimanalo and went to school at Kaiser. Especially if she takes a turn in the "Dunk the Doctor" booth from 1-3 p.m. Lots of music and a fine old time for the family of proud Kahuku folks ...

YOU might think that when "Baywatch Hawaii" star David Hasselhoff isn't in front of cameras, he'd get as far from the water as possible. Not so. He recently brought his family and parents to Sea Life Park to take in the dolphin and sea lion shows. He even swam with the friendly dolphins, but gave some fans an anxious moment when he donned SeaWalker gear and dropped in on black-tip sharks in the Hawaiian Reef Exhibit. Don't look for Miss America, Nicole Johnson, do do likewise when she visits the park tomorrow to take in the Whaler's Cove show ...

Horse cookies

LOOKING for something different to sell at the eighth annual Benefit Horse Show's white elephant sale, Sharon "Sam" Dohms and Chantis Fukunaga created what they call "Horse Cookies." Their creation took 2-1/2 hours to bake, and to test them out, the pair offered them to horses at Maunawili Farm. The horses loved them! More were then taken to the horse show committee and they went over with humans as well. They're now thinking of packaging the horse cookies with a bottle of wine for the silent auction -- sort of a horse and rider party pack. The show, a benefit for the Hawaiian Humane Society, is Sept. 4 and 5 at Maunawili Farm ...
