Forecasting crude-oil use
for Tesoro Hawaii

Carlos De Almeida makes decisions on crude oils for Tesoro Hawaii Corp. so it can optimize use at its Campbell Industrial Park refinery. Different crude oils produce different products such as jet fuel, gasolines and diesel fuel.

"We predict demand and then we know what crudes to buy," De Almeida said.

He joined the company 10 years ago as a maintenance operator with the synthetic natural gas plant and moved to plant engineer and operations area superintendent in 1992, and then to senior planner in 1996.

De Almeida, a native of Brazil, also was a research associate with the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute and the mechanical engineering department at the University of Hawaii, and a gas turbine field engineer with General Electric Technical Services Co. in Schenectady, N.Y.

He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Miami in Florida and a master's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Hawaii.
