The top assistant coach for the women's basketball team at Southern Methodist University has joined the University of Hawaii's Wahine basketball staff.

Vince Goo, UH head coach, announced the hiring of Jon Newlee yesterday.

Newlee, who has been with SMU for eight years, has coached women's basketball for 20 years at the university, junior college and high school levels.

Before joining SMU, he was head coach at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, Calif. Newlee, 40, is a graduate of San Diego State University and received a master's degree in physical education at Azusa Pacific.

"I've seen a lot of success at SMU but it's time for a change," Newlee said. "I'm really excited about coming to Hawaii. It's a great place to live and I anticipate a great year ahead for the program."
