Wedding day
bliss all around

Mug shot IT was a lovely wedding party at the Oahu Country Club for Kristine Alwies and Dr. Maurice "Mo" Nicholson. The guest list was a congenial amalgam of the bride's theater pals -- she's been in many plays here, such as the titular role in "Sylvia," at Manoa Valley Theatre -- and the groom's extended family and business friends. It was charming to see two young male friends of Kristine's feel comfortable doing a slow dance, though some of the people who found themselves next to the pair on the dance floor did double takes. One of those toasted during the evening was businessman Randy Preiser, "for setting up the blind date." At one point Preiser was watching his wife, model Karen Preiser, dancing with someone else. "Not the jealous type?" he was asked. "I'm used to it," quipped Preiser. "Everyone's in love with my wife." I suddenly felt I blended right in ...

THE bride in one private moment sighed and said, "It's not easy being a bride." I suggested she not do it too many times and she assured all around that this was it. To which the good doctor added, "Thank goodness." ... I'd be remiss not to mention the young valets at Oahu. They didn't hand out tickets, but merely suggested folks describe their cars to them when exiting. I eventually called out to one young man, "Gray Olds, dented right fender, needs a paint job." Off he started, then turned and with the greatest of theatrical timing said, "Wait a minute -- that's my car!" Though they were tipped up front by the bridal party, I insisted this valet take an extra gratuity, adding, "Comics shouldn't work cheap!" ...

Hirsute and tied down

CHATTING with feminist playwright Nancie Caraway the other night, I found her flabbergasted to learn that I've known her husband, U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie, since before he had a beard -- something she can't claim. "But he grew it in 1959," she protested. True, but I knew him then, when he was a clean-shaven body builder. Caraway loves his beard, and has only seen him without it once -- when he shaved for charity. He grew it back after he found she'd donned the mantle of woman's prerogative until he did ...

BUMPED into jewelers Helen and Bernard Hurtig the other night, looking like a million dollars each, but worth considerably more. And while they still have their shop in the Hilton Hawaiian Village, they now have the "Time Tower" at Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center featuring custom-designed "Swiss Hawaiian" watches and one creation fashioned after classic Hawaiian heirloom jewelry. Tres elegante ...

WITH a name like Sharon Serene, you get the feeling that your advertising and other creative needs are in good, almost beatific hands. So up pops her new business card for Sharon Serene Creative and it features a fish-eyed head shot of her, eyes closed, mouth wide open, looking for all the world like Edvard Munch's painting, "The Scream." ...

Dots all, folks

JUST when I thought I had the trademark on dots, along comes a new ice cream parlor in Ala Moana Center that calls itself Dripping Dots. Attending the opening ceremony Saturday and sampling the ice cream, dots and all, was a group of dessert lovers calling themselves DisGuyz. They're currently headlining the "Yes!" revue at the Polynesian Palace. Maybe they should talk the owners into changing the name of the joint to DeeseDots ...
