Greer helps U.S.
tennis team advance

Kaneohe resident John Greer and doubles partner Michael Foulks helped team USA defeat Austria, 3-0, yesterday in the Invacare World Team Cup, the wheelchair tennis equivalent of the Davis Cup.

Greer and Foulks defeated Gunther Jandrasits and Stefan Kreighofer, 7-5, 6-2, at Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

The United States has won the championship nine times in the 15-year history of the event.

Time change for UH opener

Game time for Hawaii's Sept. 4 season-opening football game against USC at Aloha Stadium has been moved to 6:30 p.m.

The kickoff had been scheduled for 6:05 p.m. It was changed after FOX Sports West-2 decided to televise the game regionally in southern California.

UH individual game tickets go on sale Aug. 23 at the stadium box office, open 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, except on the Saturdays of home games.

Maui land-surfing revival

The first He'eholua competition in nearly 200 years was held Wednesday on Maui when the kids of Kauwela '99 -.a summer youth program -"surfed" the slopes of Keopuolani Park on the replica of an ancient mountain sled they had built as part of their program.

He'eholua is the cultural sport of surfing mountains and lava fields last contested in the late 18th or early 19th century.

Individual honors went to Shyla Kamaunu, Konane Awo and Sonya Bagley among the girls and Lonohiwa Kekahuna, Colin Agarano and Kona Kuailani among the boys.

The event was sponsored by Local Motion.

Race entry deadline extended

The entry deadline has been extended to Aug. 14 for the next day's USO Hawaii 10K/5K race-walk at Hickam Air Force Base.

Entry fees are $18 for individuals and $15 per person for groups of four or more. No entries will be accepted on race day.

Applications are available at numerous athletic stores and military recreation facilities.

The USO fund-raiser is sponsored by Outrigger Hotels & Resorts.
