BYUH aide gets shot
as head coach

Brigham Young University-Hawaii assistant basketball coach Rob Nielson has been named head coach at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore.

Nielson, a former BYUH player who holds the Seasiders' career record for steals (203), has coached at the Laie college since 1990, except for a two-year hiatus while he worked on a doctorate at Iowa.

Football officiating clinic

Dotson Lewis, a member of the officiating Hall of Fame, will take part in a football officiating clinic at the University of Hawaii next month.

The free clinic will be held from 9 a.m to 3 p.m. at the lecture hall of the UH Physical Education Complex next to Cooke Field.

There will be a presentation by the Hawaii High School Athletic Association on the officiating format for the new high school football championship tournament.

Lewis will talk about new rules for the year and review mechanics and accepted procedures for six-man officiating crews, the number to be used during the tournament. He is a former football supervisor for the Southwest Officials Association.

Hawaii team advances

Hawaii (District 6) of the Big League 16-18-year-old division defeated Montana, 15-6, Tuesday at Missoula, Montana, to advance to the Western Regionals.

Adrian Mols helped Hawaii break the game wide open in the third inning with a solo homer and a two-run single.

Kyle Correa got the win for Hawaii, striking out eight in five innings.

The regionals will be at Scottsdale, Ariz., Aug. 2-6.
