Transcript of Hazel Allan’s
emergency call to police

5:47 p.m. Dec. 24, 1991.

Dispatcher Jerome Fagg: Police Department.

Hazel Allan: Hi. I was just coming along the Beach Road from Kahakai and there was a woman in a van on the beach road before you get to the first Waawaa subdivision turnoff, and she came out yelling "Help, help, help." So I stopped my car and she came running and asked me to go to the store and call the police because a woman had been raped there. She said she was in very bad shape. And so I came home. I live in Waawaa subdivision. I had a cellular phone. And I tried. Have I reached Pahoa?

Fagg: Yep.

Allan: OK, well.

Fagg: No, well no, this is Hilo. It's central dispatch.

Allan: Oh, OK. Well, I tried. I called the Pahoa Police Department number but I guess it switched me. But it's the Government Beach Road. You go down Kahakai Boulevard.

Fagg: OK. Wait a minute ma'am. Hold on. Government Beach Road.

Allan:Yeah, you go down Kahakai from Pahoa to Government Beach Road. Her van is parked on the side of the road. It's like a blue Wagoneer and it's less than two miles down the beach road and it's before the Waawaa subdivision turn off, which doesn't have a sign. It doesn't have a road post, name or anything but it's less than two miles.

Fagg: Waawaa is spelled W-A-W-A?

Allan: yes, uh huh.

Fagg: W-A-W-A, is that correct?

Allan: W-A-A W-A-A

Fagg:Subdivision?

Allan:Yes. But it's before that. It's just before the turnoff and her van is basically blocking the road.

Fagg:Government Beach Road. Blue Wagoneer before Waawaa subdivision.

Allan: Right.

Fagg: And that's, that's, where's it at?

Allan: It's a reported rape I guess. I don't know. She just asked me to call the police, so I don't know.

Fagg:OK. She didn't say anybody was in the area yet, huh?

Allan: No. The only person. Well, she came running out from like this area off the road. You know down towards the ocean and yelled for us to stop and was just basically screaming bloody murder so I backed the car around.

Fagg: OK. And this is the ah, which ah, is that Hawaiian Beaches area?

Allan:Well, Kahakai is Hawaiian Beaches. Once you get down to the Government Beach Road then you know it's, it's not a dual subdivision anymore. So he wants to go down Kahakai, make a right on the Government Beach Road. Then keep going less than two miles and you'll see the van, the blue Wagoneer.

Fagg gets Allan's name and phone number.

Allan:Other than that I have no details, you know.

Fagg: O.K. ma'am, we'll have somebody check this out.

Allan: Thank you.

Fagg: Bye.
