More than 100,000 books priced from 50 cents to $550 will be up for grabs at the 52nd annual Friends of the Library Book Sale Saturday through July 17 at the McKinley High School cafeteria.

For the first time in the book sale's history, collectible island art will be offered. More than 150 prints, etchings and paintings by local artists will be sold, as well as an array of Hawaiiana materials from the 1950s and 1960s.

Cookbooks, computer manuals, children's books, music, movies, and foreign language materials will also be available.

Last year more than $87,000 was raised for the funding of equipment, books and programs for the state's 50 public libraries. In today's difficult economy, such fund-raising support is especially important, said Executive Director Caroline Dvojacki.

Since 1952, proceeds from the book sales have raised more than $3.5 million for the Hawaii State Public Library System.

The annual book sale is the largest of its kind in the United States. Founded in 1879, the Friends of the Library of Hawaii recycles books for readers of all ages in an effort to promote reading and lifelong learning.

As one of the oldest book clubs in the country, the club celebrates 120 years of service this year. For more information about the sale, call 536-4174.
