Johnen Akiona has been promoted to assistant vice president and manager of merchant services at American Savings Bank.

"Basically, we do the credit card processing services for businesses that allow them to increase their sales," she said.

Akiona joined American Savings Bank in 1994 and most recently was the merchant services supervisor.

She also worked for Republic Federal Savings in California, and as a ticket agent for Northwest Airlines in Los Angeles and Minneapolis before returning to Hawaii in 1991 and working for American Express Travel.

Akiona lived in Kailua as a child before the family moved to Huntington Beach, Calif. She earned a bachelor's degree in business marketing from California State University at Fullerton.

Akiona is a member of the Retail Merchants Association of Hawaii, the Japan-America Society of Hawaii and Aina Hau O Kaliponi Hawaiian Civic Club.
