The Waikoloa's Dolphin Lagoon is a place
of close encounters.

Dance and dine with the
dolphins this weekend

This is the weekend to escape to the Big Island, where the Hilton Waikoloa Village is hosting the Fifth Annual Dolphin Days Summer Fest.

The event benefits the Hawaii Shriners Hospital for Children and the Pacific Marine Life Foundation, but activities are pure adult, starting with La Macherata, The Masquerade, that begins at 6 p.m. today at the Waters Edge Ballroom. Attire is formal for this Venetian-style masquerade featuring champagne, hors d'oeuvres and a silent auction. Attire is formal and masks are encouraged. Admission is $150.

Events continue with a demonstration of the Dolphin Quest program at 5 p.m. tomorrow in the Waikoloa's Dolphin Lagoon. Quest trainers will show how the dolphins dance, sing and play in a free 40-minute program.

Afterward, stroll up to the Kona Pool, where there'll be a Tropical Heat Wave Party going on. The annual dolphin birthday party will feature food, tropical drinks, entertainment by Tihati Productions and Henry Kapono. Admission is $65.

On the bill beginning 6 p.m. Saturday is the Food, Wine and Music Festival, with chefs from the Big Island and Oahu, such as Sam Choy and Peter Merriman, cooking up their signature dishes for pairing with wine, beer and spirits.

The lineup of jazz entertainers includes June Kuramoto and Kimo Cornwell of Hiroshima, Hawaii saxophonist Michael Paulo, vocalist Pauline Wilson and Japan's Minako Obata. Tickets are $75.

For information or reservations, call the Hilton Waikoloa Village at (808)-886-1234.
