Borges adopts
college band

Mug shot SINGER Jimmy Borges has a new favorite band. It's the Citrus College Big Band, which he first heard two years ago at the Hawaii International Jazz Festival. He quickly took them under his wing, bringing them over to play subsequently in both Honolulu and Maui, and even recorded a CD with them in California. "You could say I'm their godfather," says Borges, in his bad Marlon Brando imitation. In any case, he and the Citrus College band will be performing at the Royal Hawaiian's Monarch Room tomorrow through Thursday from 7 to 10 p.m. He and the 19-piece band will then fly to Maui to perform for two weeks at the Hyatt Kaanapali beginning July 1 ... Prior to the sixth annual jazz festival this year at the Hawaii Theater (July 15-18), many of those on the bill will be performing previews of their music at the Outrigger Prince Kuhio Hotel's grand ballroom July 12-14 ...

ISLE resident John Wilbur, who's been friends with the Kennedy Family since his days with the Washington Redskins in the NFL, has been spending some time with Robert Kennedy Jr., who accepted the 1999 Naito-Kassai International Childcare award yesterday, while sister Kerry Kennedy Cuomo accepted the same award on behalf of her mother, Ethel Kennedy, who was unable to attend. Wilbur has been busy arranging a meeting between Bobby Jr. and City Council Chairman Jon Yoshimura, who needs all the pointers on political in-fighting he can get ...

Call for a Cab

Whether you're devoted to Cabs -- as in Cabernet Sauvignons -- or Chards -- as in Chardonnays -- you'll get your fill at the Taste of Honolulu this weekend. There'll be some 200 Cabs and Chards offered at the annual event, with Richard Field of the R. Field Wine Tasting Centre also offering "Champagnes for the Millennium." (Purists will tell you the Millennium doesn't start until 2001, but they'll be the only ones celebrating it then!) The "Taste," a benefit for Easter Seals, will take place Friday through Sunday at the Honolulu Civic Center Grounds adjacent to City Hall ...

SPEAKING of cabs, George "Cass" Castagnola has been driving one of late to keep busy prior to the opening next month of his new Italian eatery in the Niu Valley Shopping Center. He and Jameson's owner Ed Greene are partners in the project. Let's see, does Chianti go well with corned beef and cabbage? ...

YOU may like the prescription for a long, healthy life given out by Diana Wiley, the board-certified sex therapist whose radio show, "Fifty-Plus & Fabulous," airs Saturday at 8 a.m. on KHVH. Her recipe calls for you to "eat half of what you do now, exercise regularly and make love every day." "Let's see," said one listener, "I know where restaurants and gyms are located but ..." You're on your own, pal ...

Boyz II Men

THIS weekend marks the 25th anniversary of the Honolulu Boy Choir, meaning there are lots of young execs about town who were early members. The celebration begins with an invitational reception at Washington Place on Friday, an alumni family picnic at Ala Moana Park Saturday and a concert, "It's a Celebration," Sunday at 4 p.m. at Hawaii Theater. Emceeing the show will be Danny Kaleikini, and featured performers will include Puamana, Neuva Vida, DisGuyz, Society of Seven, Honolulu Boy Choir alumni, and closing with the current Boy Choir.
