Thomas A. Wellman, controller at Alexander & Baldwin Inc., will lead the 80 members of the Financial Executives Institute-Hawaii chapter. His term ends in June 2000.

Each year, the Hawaii chapter provides $4,500 in scholarships to Hawaii Pacific University, the University of Hawaii and McKinley High School.

A mentoring program also brings students to companies to spend time with executives.

"There is one-on-one interaction with the students to help them determine their appropriate career path," Wellman said.

He has 15 years in accounting, and joined Alexander & Baldwin 10 years ago as an internal auditor. Wellman also worked for Deloitte Haskins & Sells.

He earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Brigham Young University and a master's degree in accounting from the University of Hawaii. Last year he was named to the University of Hawaii College of Business Hall of Honor.
