Hawaii Select girls’ team

Brandy Richardson of Kalaheo and Amber Ehia of McKinley head the Hawaii Select girls' basketball team that will participate in the July 12-15 U.S. Junior National Championship Tournament at Las Vegas.

Others named to the all-star team, to be coached by Kalaheo's Chico Furtado, are Sharon Wahinekapu, Jenn Conner and Sherrine Kanahele of Kalaheo; Traci Torralva of McKinley, Jodi Nakashima of Roosevelt, Rosemarie Kelly of Nanakuli, Monica Tokoro of Iolani, Christine Ciacci of University High, Caroline Ane of Punahou and Rosalinda Maslur of Maui High.

Before its trip to Las Vegas, Hawaii Select will play a series of games against former college and high school players here and also take part in the Basketball in Paradise tournament June 25-27 at the University of Hawaii.

Match play semifinalists

Sibylle Brinkman defeated medalist Randi Sakihara, 2 and 1, to advance to today's semifinals of the Hawaii State Women Golf Association Match Play Championship at the Oahu Country Club.

Traci Kashiwabara-Ayabe eliminated Waiakea High's Cecily Quinajon, 1-up on the 19th hole, as Mahina Ah Yuen and Nola Miyasaki also advanced yesterday.

Ah Yuen beat Loreen Kunisaki, 4 and 3, while Miyasaki ousted Mona Kim-Lee, 2-up.

HPU tennis players excel

Erik Sandblom, Johan Sandblom and Mathias Lundmark of the Hawaii Pacific men's tennis team, were named to the GTE/CoSIDA National Spring At-Large Academic All-America team yesterday.

Seniors Johan Sandblom and Lundmark earned second-team honors and junior Erik Sandblom was named to the third team. All three are from Voxjo, Sweden.

Kewalo Basin surf meet

The Hawaiian South Shore Open, a longboard surfing contest in the Ocean Club Series, will take place Saturday and Sunday at Kewalo Basin.

Also scheduled is a Van's Pro Series event in which some 30 professionals will try to qualify for the World Championships by earning ASP points.

Soccer title to Maui club

F.C. Maui won the Mama's Fish House Invitational Soccer Tournament on Maui last weekend, defeating Budweiser, a team made up primarily of U.S. Marines from Oahu, 3-1, in the championship game.

Goals by Nalu Akinaka, J.C. Fernandez and Bumper Kikuchi carried F.C. Maui to victory and Fernandez was named the tournament's most valuable player.

In the semifinals, F.C. Maui beat reigning State Cup champ Vaiete of Oahu, 3-2, and Budweiser downed Shipley's BAM, 3-0.
