Viloria wins
crown in U.S.
boxing meet

Waipahu's Brian Viloria won the U.S. Boxing Challenge 106-pound championship yesterday at Colorado Springs, Colo., by outpointing Ron Siler of Cincinnati, 17-13.

The victory gave Viloria a berth in next year's U.S. Olympic Trials. He also qualified for the World Amateur Championships Aug. 20-27 at Houston.

Sonnenberg leads OCC golf

Eric Sonnenberg shot a 4-under-par 67 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead going into the final round of the OCC Invitational, which will be played tomorrow at the Oahu Country Club.

Sonnenberg's 36-hole total of 137 leads Damien Jamila by one. Jarrod Mizusawa, who shared the first-round lead with Regan Lee, is three strokes back at 140 along with Mark Chun. Lee is alone in fifth at 142.

OIA, ILH split twin bill

The OIA and ILH baseball all-stars split the Wally Yonamine Goodwill Tournament doubleheader yesterday at Hans L'Orange Field.

Pearl City's Brandon Hookala went 3-for-3 with a double and triple to drive in six runs as the OIA won the first game, 10-3.

Kainoa Obrey of Iolani went 4-for-5 with two home runs and eight RBIs as the ILH took the second game, 15-9.

Miyagi four strokes back

Julie Miyagi of Honolulu shot a 69 and was in a six-way tie for fourth place after the first round of the Aurora Health Care Futures Tour golf tournament at Sioux Falls, S.D., yesterday.

Jane Egan led after the first day with a 65. Two-time Arizona State All-American Grace Park, a former junior golfer from Hawaii, shot a 5-over 77 in her professional debut.

Tennis, anyone?

Rusty Komori, the Punahou boys' tennis coach, May Beamer of the Mililani girls' tennis team and BYU-Hawaii's Dave Porter, the NCAA Division II tennis coach of the year, will be the guest speakers at Monday's Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon.

Also on the dais for the noon meeting at the Pagoda Restaurant will be Mark Kalilikane, director of a junior golf program in Honolulu.

Honolulu-California polo

The Honolulu Polo Club, led by Mike Dailey and his son, Devon, takes on the Eldorado Polo Club of Palm Springs, Calif., today at Waimanalo.

The gates open at 1 p.m. and the polo action starts at 2:30. Admission is $3.

Eckert sets swimming mark

Mark Eckert of the Kamehameha Aquatics won the boys' 11-12 400-meter freestyle event in the record time of 4 minutes, 30.96 seconds and his club also set a Hawaii record of 4:22.72 in the boys' 11-12 400-meter freestyle relay yesterday in the Hawaii Age Group Swimming Championship meet at Hilo.

Aulea Swim Club topped the team standings with 141 points.
