Hammerheads’
Paogofie IPFL Player
of Week for second time

Hawaii defensive back Chris Paogofie, who had 13 tackles and broke up two passes in the Hammerheads' 38-34 road victory over the Idaho Stallions last Saturday, was named the Indoor Professional Football League Defensive Player of the Week yesterday.

It's the second time this season Paogofie has earned IPFL player of the week honors.

With their third straight victory, the Hammerheads (5-3) climbed into second place in the six-team league. The Texas Terminators are first at 7-1.

The Hawaii team stays in Idaho this week for a Saturday rematch with the Stallions.

Wilson edged out in golf playoff

Dean Wilson of Kaneohe was beaten by Nick Klassen on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff in the Novell Provo Open golf tournament at Provo, Utah, Sunday.

Wilson and Klassen each shot 12-under-par 204 in 54-hole regulation play. Wilson made a four-foot birdie putt on the last hole of regulation to force the playoff.

Blaisdell putting bonanza

The Sport Court $100,000 Challenge, a putting contest for amateur golfers to benefit junior golf, will be held during Hawaii Golf Expo '99 at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall on June 25-26.

All entrants - amateurs only - who make a 10-foot putt will have a chance to putt for the grand prize.

They will be entered into a drawing for the finals. The names of the five finalists will be drawn at 3 p.m., June 26, when those picked must be present.

The final five can win $100,000 by making 10-foot, 20-foot, 40-foot and 50-foot putts in that order.

Sieradzki won by one

Henry Sieradzki won the Maui Open golf tournament with a 54-hole total of 213, shooting 71 in Sunday's final round at the Wailea Gold Course to beat Marc Orlowski by one stroke. Orlowski shot 66 Sunday.

Sieradzki's 36-hole total of 142 was incorrectly reported as the winning score in yesterday's Star-Bulletin.

Healani women going 'iron'

A six-woman Healani Canoe Club crew plans to race "iron," without alternates, in the Bankoh Na Wahine O Ke Kai race from Molokai to Oahu in September.

In previous Kaiwi Channel crossings there have been nine- or 10-member crews with paddlers alternating in and out of the canoes so that each paddles for 20 minutes and rests for 10.

But there is no minimum number of paddlers in the race rules, so the Healani women have decided to go with just six.

Calciolari to C. Washington

Forward Chandy Calciolari of Waikoloa and Parker School, the Big Island's prep soccer Player of the Year, has signed a national letter of intent to attend and play for Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Wash.
