Waianae hosts
ho‘olaulea

If you've been looking for an excuse to head out Waianae way, gas up the car, because this is the weekend to go.

The Waianae Valley Homestead Community Association is producing Ho'olaulea by the Sea from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Waianae Boat Harbor.

Presented in conjunction with the 3rd Annual Ahi Fever Fishing Tournament, the festival offers food, entertainment and fun.

A record 260 boats are entered in this year's big-game fishing tournament. Ahi Fever contestants will prepare fried-fish plate lunch and poke platters for sale.

Fishermen will demonstrate how to clean, cut and prepare an ahi. Presentations also will include ogo farming; cooking sunfish, or tilapia; a vertical fish tasting; and the Waianae Diet Program.

Treats for the keiki include jumping castles, a train ride, a petting zoo and pony rides. And sponsor Hawaiian Electric Co. Inc. is pitching a huge tent and filling it with games and activities.

For those with more grown-up tastes in toys, the latest in trucks and boats will be on display.

The Makaha Sons -- Moon, John & Jerome headlines the entertainment with a concert at 6 p.m. Saturday. More than 20 other local acts -- including BB Shawn, Na Mele Rasta and Kanilau & Halau Na Mamo O Ka'ala -- will perform over the course of the weekend.

Food and craft booths will be open and fresh-from-the-sea ahi will be on sale.

The event is sponsored by Chevron Hawaii, Coca-Cola, X-treme Fun, Ahuna Party Rentals, Hawaiian Electric, Gaspro and Nozawa's Ark Petting Farm. Proceeds benefit Waianae youth programs.

All concerts and activities are free.

Extreme BulletStar1/2
Hawaii Imax Theatre
Not rated

Most people venture out into nature to relax or exercise, or do a little of both. But that isn't enough for some. Some people venture out into nature to terrify themselves.

Director Jon Long used Imax technology to capture a look at these extreme athletes.

The Imax film "Extreme" opened Friday at Hawaii Imax Theatre.

The adventure sports feature includes footage of local windsurfers Robbie Naish, Jason Polakow and Josh Stone; and surfers Ken Bradshaw and Ross Clarke-Jones.

The athletes in "Extreme" also test the limits in skiing, snowboarding, and rock climbing and ice climbing. (See review below.)

Also playing at the Imax in Waikiki are "Hidden Hawaii," "Whales," and "Ring of Fire." Films are shown daily, on the hour, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

For more information, call 923-IMAX (4629).

Coming to the big screen

Two movies begin their Oahu run this week:

Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me

Rated PG-13. Opens with late-night showings Thursday.
Mike Myers returns as Austin, a British secret agent/fashion photographer/sex magnet who wakes up, unchanged and politically incorrect, in the 1990s after being cryogenically frozen in the 1960s in this sequel to the 1997 movie.

Dreamlife of Angels

Rated R. Opens Friday.
Stars Elodie Bouchez and Natacha Regnier shared the 1998 Cannes Film Festival Best Actress award for their work in this film. It slowly studies the lives of two young women, adrift in a harsh world, in search of connections. They strike up a bond of convenience and perceived similarities, but have such different needs and outlooks that they soon begin growing apart.
